Indian equity markets ended sharply higher on Monday, with the BSE Sensex surging 1,233.25 points, or 1.66 per cent, to close at 75,692.78 and the NSE Nifty 50 gaining 387.70 points, or 1.68 per cent, to settle at 23,440.80. Both indices closed at their highs for the day, extending gains for a third consecutive session.

The rally was broad-based. Energy stocks led the advance, with Reliance Industries, Tata Steel, JSW Steel and Shriram Finance among the top gainers on the Nifty 50. Infosys, ICICI Bank, HDFC Life, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank were among the major laggards, a reminder that even on a strong day the market did not rise in unison.

What drove the rally

Market watchers pointed to several supports coming together at once. Better-than-expected second-quarter earnings, improving domestic economic indicators and foreign investors turning buyers amid a global rotation in artificial intelligence-related stocks all helped sentiment, according to market coverage of the session. Optimism surrounding talks between the United States and Iran also lifted mood, pushing oil prices lower and easing one of the market's recent worries.

In the commodities market, Brent crude oil prices declined more than 4 per cent to 108.54 dollars per barrel on Monday. While prices have eased compared with last week, they remain above their long-term average, so the relief for energy-importing economies is partial rather than complete. Gold prices continued to remain weak, trading at Rs 1,38,420 per 10 grams for 24-karat gold, while silver gained 1.65 per cent to Rs 1,82,094 per kg. On the currency front, the rupee weakened 21 paise to 94.97 against the US dollar, compared with Friday's close of 94.76.

From Friday's close to Monday's high

The scale of Monday's move is clear against the previous session. On Friday, the Sensex had settled at 74,459.53 and the Nifty at 23,053.10. Monday's advance therefore recovered more than 1,200 points on the Sensex in a single session and carried the Nifty back above the 23,400 mark, a level it had not held since late September.

Energy was the standout theme of the day. The Nifty Oil and Gas index surged by nearly 6 per cent, making it the best-performing sectoral index, as investors bought into energy, commodity and metal shares ahead of the Diwali festivities. Construction materials and telecom shares also featured among the stronger sectors, while diversified and some financial stocks lagged behind.

What comes next

Attention now turns to the next round of corporate results, with companies including Bajaj Finserv, Solar Industries and the State Bank of India scheduled to report on Tuesday. Their numbers, along with the direction of crude oil prices and foreign investor flows, are likely to set the tone for the rest of the week.

For now, Monday's close gives the market a firm footing heading into the festive week. Whether the rally holds will depend on whether earnings continue to surprise on the upside and whether the easing in oil prices proves durable rather than a one-day move.
